Unlike many other companies that can claim a near 100 year heritage, Crosman was founded as an airgun company rather than a maker of bullet rifles. Formed in 1923 in New York, the company is one of the largest manufacturers in the world and includes the Benjamin brand, which it acquired in 1991. In latter years, following its acquisition by an investment group, the company has expanded to include paintball equipment as well as a range of sporting optics.
Introduction to the Crosman 2240
In contrast to many Co2 pistols, the Crosman 2240 is not intended to be a replica of another brand. Its design dates back to the 1950 and its predecessor, the Crosman 150; its longevity is testament to the quality and performance of this affordable pistol.
Crosman 2240 Review
Weighing just over 800 grammes and measuring 280mm long with a 190mm barrel, the Crosman 2240 is the epitome of a simple, no frills Co2 pistol the performance of which belies its budget price tag. The mainly metal construction has a few plastic components but feels, and indeed is, solid and well-made. The ambidextrous plastic grip is comfortable and provides easy access to the trigger. The open sights, the rear one of which is adjustable with a screwdriver, are sufficient to deliver groups at 10 metres that would embarrass a more expensive product. The single shot, bolt action mechanism is easy to use – simply pull back the bolt, insert a .22 pellet into the breech, close the bolt and you’re ready to go. A single 12g Co2 bulb is inserted into a cylinder that is accessed by unscrewing a threaded cap in the end. Inserted nipple first, the bulb is pierced when the cap is replaced and screwed in, releasing the Co2 under pressure into the cylinder. Expect around 30 shots depending on external temperature at around five ft. lbs.

Other Crosman pistols to consider include the pump-up pneumatic Crosman .177 Classic Pistol and Benjamin Trail NP B/B .177 break barrel pistol. Most other Crosman Co2 pistols are replica designs apart from the Crosman 2300T .177 Target Air Pistol. Also worth considering is the SMK Artemis range of Co2 and PCP pistols.
